The ever-reliable death metal gods Immolation are back. I like that this is not a band that jumps on trends and gimmicks, and that's still true on Descent. These guys have always been about dark, heavy, crushing death metal. That's what people expect, and that's what they deliver. Go somewhere else if you want trendy garbage. Rant over. ;) Their signature sound is intact, a kind of mid-paced death metal that pins you to the ground throughout, with a dark and chilling atmosphere, with nightmare-inducing growls that really push the music into darker and more evil territory. I'm not really hearing anything all that different from some of the band's past albums, but it doesn't matter: When you're good at something, you keep at it, and that's exactly what Immolation did on this album.
