Insurrection offer some solid, thrashy death metal on their fourth album, Extraction. These guys have a bit of a European touch to their sound, touching lightly on the Swedish melodic death metal sound at times, while remaining safely on the "death" side of the fence. It's hard to ignore the fact that some of their songs are sung in French (they hail from the province of Quebec) and personally I found that a bit distracting since that's my native tongue and I'm not quite used to hearing it in growls, though that certainly made some of the lyrics more easily decipherable. The vocalist has a deep, barking growl style that fits the catchy (yes, catchy) death metal here like a glove. The band strikes a good balance between heaviness, brutality and melody. The band thrashes along relentlessly and the end result is an interesting and fun, diverse album. I found it easy to just leave the album on repeat play and not get tired of it. Of the Insurrection material I've heard so far, this is certainly their best album.
