Revenant, from Italy's Zombie Scars, contains some decent Thrash Metal, despite a more modern bent to the songwriting. The vocals are a monotone shout, like Tom Araya on some of the later Slayer albums, and they don't really add much to the songs. Guitarist Francesco Riganelli still remembers how to lay down a tasty Thrash solo, so all is not lost. The riffs are decent and while not overly stale, Revenant plays out like a White Zombie/Rob Zombie album, meaning it sounds pretty cool for a song or two, and then starts to repeat itself. "Blessed Are the Devils" is a monster opener, played hard and fast, but the rest of the album doesn't deliver anything as good. Much of Revenant just circles the ring like a boxer landing glancing blows here and there, but never delivering a knockout punch. Decent, but not mandatory.
