Shoot ‘Em Up is the second full-length album from Quebec's Mortör. Straightforward Thrash with Death vocals is the order of the day. The production is modern and precise but the band leans more toward the old school in their songwriting, which is better than average. The riffs pulse like a frantic heartbeat. The solos are not particularly spectacular but songs like "Infidels" are enhanced greatly by some serpentine fret work from guitarist Antonin Perras-Foisy. The vocals of Yolin Lafrenière are a basic Death growl, nothing over the top, and are decipherable with a bit of effort.
Shoot ‘Em Up is not much different from the other Death/Thrash Metal out there but it is done better than many. I'm not usually a big fan of Death vocals but I found Lafrenière's easier to listen to than most. I would recommend Shoot ‘Em Up to all fans of Death/Thrash as well as traditional Thrash fans looking to expand their horizons into the extreme vocal world.
