The Futile Quest For Immortality

Three years after their 2007 The New Dawn release, this Swedish duo is back with The Futile Quest for Immortality . For those familiar with Anachronaeon, you will find yourselves in familiar territory, as this new album follows up pretty much the same path as their previous one.

Anachronaeon plays a melodic death metal bearing a certain progressive edge. The vocals of songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Patrick Carlsson are very good, whenever he used his growls. As for the clean ones, well, let's say that they are a bit too mainstream and he should stick with the growling. This release appears as some sort of a concept album. The juicy riffs are prominent and the more delicate leads and arpeggios form the melodic side of their art. On these and in the time signatures, you'll find their progressive feel. On a more subdue note, the drumming could have used a little boost, because they are pretty discreet. Other than that, The Futile Quest for Immortality is a cool album to listen and it has quite a few good compositions to discover. Amongst them: "The Beats Called Man", "Towards Purity" and "Grief was Never Far Away and I Invited Her to Stay (instrumental) are proof of Patrick's good songwriting abilities.
