It took me a few listens before getting into this one, some pretty lo-fi Finnish Black Metal that features doomy and hate-filled horror-like atmospheres and some raw-as-fuck guitars that border on annoying at times (a few passages sound a little overdone in terms of lo-fi/rawness.) This is mostly mid-paced, occasionally crushingly heavy (as in "pins you to the ground and run you over by a train" heavy), with some faster passages that sometimes sound like old Darkthrone (although they shouldn't be dismissed as a Darkthrone clone.) The vocals are the mandatory BM rasps, and Förgjord seem to have made a point of making them as undecipherable and raw/screechy as they could, sometimes sounding more like a distortioned sound than actual vocals. This all sounds messy? It sure is, and that's why it takes a few listens to start appreciating it. Even though this is rather minimal (almost 100% "no frills"), repeated and attentive listens keep revealing some subtleties missed on previous listens, each time unearthing more sickness and evil hidden deep under this distortion fest.
Unpolished, raw, messy, sounding like a voyage through hell - it's been done in Black Metal before, and Ajast Ilkuisuuten won't win any awards for innovation, but if you're looking for some evil-sounding raw BM with a touch of depressiveness, this is definitely worth checking out.
