Dissonance Theory is the first new Coroner studio album in over 30 years, and it is good to have the guys back. Never a band that fits the "typical" thrash mold, Coroner's often technical and even progressive take on the style is on full display on Dissonance Theory along with a collection of crushing thrash riffs. I struggled to get into their '80s output, but I find this new album a bit more accessible without sacrificing the intricate nature of Coroner's songwriting style. The harsh, death-adjacent vocals, pounding drums and savage guitars are enhanced with subtle keys and inventive riffs throughout the album so whether you want a punishing groove ("Consequence"), some progressive flair ("Crisium Bound") or an unexpected left turn (the King Crimson-style keyboards on "Prolonging"), Coroner has you covered. It is a grower so if you are a thrash fan, be sure to give yourself plenty of spins to get the full flavor of Dissonance Theory. You'll be glad you did.
