Mournful Congregation are a generally well-regarded Funeral Doom band that I have somehow missed over the years. This is the second part of their Exuviae of Gods series of EPs, and I don't know if it's part two of three or if this is it. With a forty-minute running time and only three tracks, you know this is going to be some monolithic shit, so let's get into it.

If there's a criticism to level here, it's that this is not awesome, but it is really good. Beautiful Doom riffing with some startlingly good melodies and a lot of space and sweep to the compositions. The production is excellent, with so much depth to the sound it really gives the compositions room to breathe. The vocals are a pretty flat rasp that doesn't really add anything, and I think that's emblematic of the major problem with Mournful Congregation—there is nothing they do that really stands out from other bands of their kind. They do what they do really well, but they don't do anything that hasn't already been done.
