This band is all about classic Entombed, you can tell that just looking at their logo, and indeed, on this album you will hear straight-up worship for the old school of Swedish Death Metal. What sets this a bit apart is that you don’t often hear it done this well. A lot of bands can nail the aesthetic of the ‘90s scene—the logo, the art, the guitar sound—but not many of them can keep up in the songwriting department. After all, the way the Swedish scene blew up back then was not because of a look or a sound, it was founded on genuinely good songwriting. There are (and were) plenty of bands that can play fast or heavy as hell, but they can’t write songs for shit. Despite their avowed reverence for the old days, Disfuneral have written a solid album first and added the trappings after. This has a lot more energy and inventiveness than the usual Entombed clone, and it speaks for this band having something to offer besides heavy nostalgia. Check it out.
