I've read the name Horrendous in a lot of places but never got around to checking out any of their work until 2018's Idol dropped into my review queue. Complex time signatures and acrobatic leads are sure indicators that Horrendous are on the progressive end of the spectrum but despite the technicality, they haven't eschewed a production that brings some warmth to the performance. Rather than coldly sterile, there's a rawness to the guitars as well as the vocals that makes it easy to understand why people like this stuff. Tracks like "Idolater" bring together the progressive and brutal sides of the death metal coin quite nicely. Death metal is rarely my cup of tea but if it was, Idol would be in my playlist.
