Finland has its own unique style of death metal and Abhorrence was one of the early proponents, existing briefly in the late ‘80s before resurfacing in 2012. The band’s discography is yet to contain a proper full-length album and that doesn’t change with their 2018 release, Megalohydrothalassophobic, a 5-song EP. Taking lyrical cues from Lovecraft, Abhorrence meld standard death metal instrumentation and songwriting with some truly creepy sound effects to create the kind of otherworldly atmospheres one would expect for the subject matter. On that level, Megalohydrothalassophobic succeeds in sounding different from most other bands without being so experimental that they would only appeal to a handful of fans. I especially like the disjointed string effects on "The End Has Already Happened" as it makes me feel like I’m watching some strange and unsettling Japanese horror film. Definitely worth checking out.
