This is the 4th album for Ankou Awaits, a band from Illinois who play a barbaric, vicious variety of Black Metal. Often bands with Celtic themes are atmospheric or folky, but that is not the case here. Ankou Awaits rip out fast, chaotic riffing with only a few melodic touches here and there. This could maybe go a bit more in for atmosphere, but the atonal flailing of the music is feral enough to keep your attention anyway. This actually sounds more than a bit like extreme proto bands like Bestial Warlust or Blasphemy. In other words, it sounds as if the last twenty years of melodic or symphonic Black Metal just never happened. The production is pretty good, with a raw sound that does not bury any of the instruments. This band could use a bit more structure to their compositions, as sometimes the chaos overwhelms everything else, but this is still a good, visceral recording.
