The Wounded Kings are a bit of an odd band. From a rather shapeless, almost ambient type of Doom band on their earlier works, they have moved into being more straight doom and have even added a female singer and drifted toward the more common UK Doom sound of the moment. That said, I still don't find this superlative. They have some good riffs, and a nice, warm guitar tone that does not lack for punch. Sharie Neyland has a solid voice without much flash, but she gets the job done and sounds fairly occult while doing it. The problems this album has are those this band has always struggled with - songs that are long and slow without enough atmosphere to sustain them and thus become dull, and compositions that are too drawn out and lack tension. This is a good album, but far from a great one.
