Liquid Breathing is the second EP from Italy's Avelion, a band whose style reminds me of the dark, progressive sounds of Germany's Lanfear and France's Coexistence. The guitars are down-tuned which gives the three songs on Liquid Breathing a heavy but more modern sound, which I could do without. This isn't full-on Progressive Metal, so we don't get subjected to endless time changes and odd vocal lines but there is definitely some technically challenging passages and the members of Avelion can certainly play. The overall sound is good for a self-produced release. At the end of the day, the songs are what make or break a band and Avelion's songwriting isn't particularly noteworthy. I've listened to Liquid Breathing several times and still can't remember a single riff or chorus so they've got a bit of work to do in the "catchiness" department. Avelion isn't bad but they aren't great, either. There's talent, but that only gets you so far.
