Preachers of the Night is the fifth full-length for Germany's Powerwolf and it picks up the Power Metal banner where Blood of the Saints left off and continues to ride fast and carry the flag high. This time out, Powerwolf sound strikingly similar to Sweden's Sabaton. The huge choruses on tracks like "Amen & Attack" and "Cardinal Sin" are instantaneously memorable and there are plenty of riffs and shredding solos mixed with melodic keyboard runs and a powerful rhythm section. Some of the lyrics are Christian in nature, with a few tongue-in-cheek undertones, but everything is in an Old Testament, eye-for-eye sort of vein. No sappy love ballads on Preachers of the Night. Singer Attila Dorn doesn't have the same power as Sabaton's Joachim Broden, but he'll sweep you up with his delivery, nonetheless.
Powerwolf aren't out to rewrite the rules of Power Metal, just to take the style and run with it. And on Preachers of the Night, run they do. Fun; that's all you need to know. Turn off your brain and enjoy.
