After listening to Sanktuary's debut album, Something Fierce, I would hazard a guess these Canadians grew up listening to a whole lot of NWOBHM bands. The music on Something Fierce is basically Power/Thrash with loads of sharp riffing, galloping bass lines and excellent lead work. You can hear 80s-vintage influences from Iron Maiden's melodic twin guitars ("Hail the Villain") to Venom's loose and aggressive Thrash ("Thrill of the Kill.") The songwriting is sound and the band plays with plenty of energy, further enhancing the NWOBHM vibe. The vocals are a weak spot, especially on the high parts, where they tend to go a bit flat. Singer Alan Binger seems much more comfortable with the mid-range he uses on the more Thrash-oriented songs.
Sanktuary don't specifically say they are shooting for the NWOBHM sound but they capture it as well as any of the bands out there today who do. Something Fierce isn't perfect but it is a promising debut nonetheless.
