Chapters Of Tragedy

Silent Voices was formed back in 1995 back in Finland. They are mainly a progressive metal band but there are a few songs that give some indications of leaning slightly towards power metal.

The songs on this album show a lot of variety with numerous tempo changes within just about every song. There are only seven songs on this album but it still clocks in at just over 46 minutes of total running time so the numerous tempo changes are a bit more impressive that it all meshes together so seamlessly. Vocals are also worthy of note since they also show a lot of diversity while still retaining masterful control. The highlight of the album though belongs squarely with the guitar work (after all it is a bit difficult to play progressive metal without a good guitarist…heh). The best way to describe the playing style is that it is done with a lot of feel. That is to say whatever the particular part of the song requires that is exactly what comes through. For the fans of the absolute shred crowd there is plenty of that to go around as well.

Even though I am not a huge fan of the progressive metal genre as I believe it has a habit of sounding a lot alike after a while, I actually liked this album quite a bit. As far as bring something new to the genre it doesn’t but it is certainly worthwhile and just as good as some of the other leading bands of the genre. Recommended.
