Revenge in Blood is a low-fi, old-school slab of Heavy Metal from Germany's Warcry. There's a Heavy/Thrash base of music over which Martin "The Almighty" Knötzele grunts like Tom G. Warrior, screams like King Diamond and generally goes all over the map with his singing. The music has an early 80s, loose feel to it. I would say sloppy, because that's how it sounds, but since I'm sure the band was going for this early Neat Records sound, I don't think that is fair. The lyrics are in that early, pre-Black Metal, evil style, dealing with all sorts of debauchery and violence. I particularly enjoyed "Bloody Black Axe" for its shameless description of carnage, but that is certainly not the only example on the album.

There's nothing particularly captivating about Revenge in Blood, with only a few catchy choruses and songwriting that borders on clichéd. Knötzele doesn't do that great a job transitioning from one vocal style to the other, which is also a bit distracting. Still, a not un-enjoyable trip back to the early days of Venom, Celtic Frost, Mercyful Fate and others. Don't expect to be blow away and you won't be disappointed.
