...and Oceans is a band that has made a career out of not being classified by anyone simply by staying in a constant state of motion when it comes to their songwriting and the new album Cypher is certainly no exception.
Gone are the days when this band was considered a black metal band with a distinct style. This album is industrial metal from start to finish. Think of Rammstein with more advanced songwriting and minus the cheese factor. I don’t have anything against industrial style metal in and of itself but it does start to get a bit boring after some time. At first listen I really kind of liked this album but the more I listened the more I began to get bored with it. I have come to the conclusion that although I can enjoy the album on occasion this is not an album that will be in heavy rotation. This is what I like to call mood music… music you will listen to depending on the type of mood you are in. If you feel like listening to an angry, heavily industrial influence metal album well I think this is better than a Rammstein album any day of the week.
Overall an album that has its place in a collection but suffers from extended playtime. Certainly not a bad album but if you are adverse to the aforementioned sound you may want to look elsewhere.
