Angel Dust is a band with quite a history considering they released their first album 16 years ago. Starting off as more of a thrash influenced band they have become more of a progressive/power metal band since returning to scene after a 10-year absence. Unlike a lot of bands that change their sound or direction Angel Dust is a band that has pulled off the change with some very impressive work. With albums like “Border of Reality”, “Bleed” and “Enlighten the Darkness” they have become one of the best prog/power metal bands out there today. The new album “Of Human Bondage” not only continues the streak of excellent albums but also takes it to another level and may very well be the best work they have ever done.
After the critical acclaim they received after “Enlighten the Darkness” I was wondering if they would be able to capture the same magic in the studio for the next go around. After listening to “Of Human Bondage” I have found that I had nothing to worry about. This is a killer album from beginning to end. I noticed a slight change in the sound however but trust me when I say this is a good move. There is still plenty of melody to go around but the overall sound is darker and more aggressive. Everything about this album is top notch from the excellent vocals to the killer guitar work but the highlight for me is the songs as a whole. The songs are extremely well written with excellent hooks that really draw you in and defy you not to pay attention (hell I have been listening to the disc while I am writing this and I keep losing my train of thought…:)).
Overall an excellent release that I think may very well be the best of their career and definitely a worthy addition to any metalheads collection. Highly Recommended.
