Hymns of the Cthulhu Mythos
Now this is some underground evil nastiness. The Ziggurat are a very low-fi, DIY band from the desolate, soul-blasting wasteland of Radford, Virginia who have managed two albums and an EP in their decade of existence. I love deeply underground Death Metal, and this album is exactly what I am talking about. Raw production, evil riffs, and barbaric vocals that make each song memorable and vicious. This sounds like it was probably recorded in a garage or a basement or something, with the dirty, fuzzy guitar tone and the loose quality of the rhythm section. This is not double-bass clickety-click Death metal, but a slower-paced, riffy hybrid of Death, Venom, and early Sodom to produce a twisted Lovecraftian tour through killer chunks of metal like “The Road To Dunwich” and “Beyond The Reef”
This is not anything resembling ‘modern’ or ‘technical’ or ‘brootal’ Death Metal, but if you love slimy, dirty underground Death, then I highly recommend you check this out.
