I really don't know much about this Black Metal beast called Poccolus, aside from what I got with the promo. Most of this material is actually from a demo dating back to 1994, as well as two live tracks from a 1997 show performed at the Latvian Black Friday concert.

The demo sound of this recording fits this type of Black Metal pretty well. The cardboard and subdued sounding drum kit does not particularly bother me, for a change. Funny to notice though that the rhythm section (bass and drums) actually sounds better live than on their demo. This is not all furiousness, no harmonies Black Metal, but something more "refined" and melodic. Poccolus are adding some dark atmosphere with keyboard introductions in most compositions. Clean vs. distorted arpeggios add, as always, a nice melodic feel to their music. The raspy vocals often sound tortured, but can also become quite ghostly at times, which is pretty tasty in my Black Metal grimoire. I would be curious to find out how these songs would sound if they were given a proper sound production. The live performances are good too, even if more of the "in your face" type.

Well, Ragana is an interesting demo that includes some nice compositions like "I Pagoniu Zeme", "Ragana" and "Sukvietmas (Kraujas ir Ugnis). It is said to be for fans of Burzum, Emperor and Bathory.
