This is atmospheric black metal with a variety of "post" influences, but there's still plenty of "real" black metal throughout Marodeur. The band is definitely more on the melancholic, borderline depressing/despair side of things, especially driven by the poignant anguished vocals that really draw the listener in. It's not music to headbang to and it's rather depressing yet kind of soothing at the same time, so how it works on you will really depend on your state of mind at the time. It's not happy stuff, that's for sure. We're not talking DSBM here, but it might be best avoided if you're feeling too depressed. Personally, I find this works well on a gray, rainy day where you just kick back and relax and put the album on.
