Thyrathen is a band comprised of veterans from the Greek black metal scene, notably Varathron vocalist Stefan Necroabyssious, and Lakonic is their second album. With that information in hand, it should be no surprise Lakonic is full of Greek-style black metal, the kind that is very melodic and includes different vocal styles. Thyrathen bring an epic vibe to their songwriting with simple, echo-driven guitars and spoken-word passages and do a good job creating an atmosphere of gloomy, desolate spaces. Lakonic has a good sound, but I don't find anything overly compelling that makes me want to go back again and again. I like it well enough while it is on, but once it is over, I find it easy to move on to something else. Fans of Greek black metal will likely appreciate what Thyrathen are doing even though they will just as likely have heard similar efforts before.
