Debut EP from this Finnish band who seem interested in mining the classic Melodeath sound for the shit that was good about it—sharp melodies, catchy hooks, and the combination of Trad Metal riffing with Death Metal heaviness—without getting mired in the stupid prog tendencies, enervated vocals, and dull songwriting that came to dominate the Euro scene by the middle aughts. This broadly sounds like the classic eras of bands like In Flames or Dark Tranquility, with hooky riffing and a lot of keyboards—but the very fact that I have to specify the "classic eras" says all I have to say about what this band is trying to do and what they are trying to avoid. This isn't original because it's not meant to be, but rather an effort to scale off 20 years of other crap that got encrusted on a once-strong formula. I want to hear more of what this band can do.
