It's something of a habit for people to see a melodic death metal band with a woman as their singer and immediately make comparisons to Arch Enemy, so let's just get this out of the way: yes, Swansong have some similarities to Arch Enemy on their debut album, largely through the harsher aspects of their sound and Jemiina's bestial growling, but no, they are not a mere clone act. Frankly, the melodic aspect of their sound reminds me more of '90s melodeath along the lines of In Flames, Dark Tranquility, and even Eurachrist, and the hooky, tasty guitar work is indeed a highlight of their sound, particularly on the song "Frost and Winter." I will say that all this means that Swansong are currently a pretty derivative band, though there's enough going on that I think they'll find a more unique identity as they go on. This isn't going to blow anyone away, but I quite enjoy Awakening, and if you like some old-fashioned Swedish melodeath, I bet you will too.
