There seems to be a mini-scene of Heavy/Epic Metal bands in Cyprus, including acts like Solitary Sabred and March to Die. Receiver don't have a name that really grabs your attention, but their music will do that just fine. Laid on a classic, NWOBHM base, the guitar work on this is innovative and lively, never settling for the obvious and creating some really stellar riffs and leads. The songwriting style combined with the vocals of Nikoletta Kyprianou create an almost medieval/'70s vibe that is retro without sounding dated. If I have a complaint, it's that the production is not great. I like the underground feel, but too much of the first-rate guitar work gets buried in the mix, and Kyprianou's vocals also are frequently too muffled to take center stage, even when they should. But the talent and songwriting craft shine through on this, and makes me hope for great things for this band.
