Masada formed way back in 1986 and were active for about five years before splitting up and re-forming in 2013. Despite all those years of activity, they do not have a full-length album yet. If this EP is any indication, a first album will be something to look forward to. Masada play thrash with a hint of death metal, though I'd say it's not enough to throw them in the "death/thrash> subgenre. Despite them having roots in the '80s, their thrash metal doesn't sound parachuted from that time period. The old-school roots are, of course, undeniable, but The Blood Will Flow comes off sounding more like "newer" thrash bands like Warbringer. I'm not crazy about the vocals that are a little chipmunky, though that doesn't make the songs unlistenable. Lots of razor-sharp guitars and machine-gun riffs are delivered with a pretty clean sound, so nothing raw and dirty here, and they throw in some short, quiet melodic passages that remind me a bit of late-80s Maiden. This being an EP, it's unfortunately short and leaves you wanting for more, but Masada sound different enough from what's being released lately to even be considered fresh. Not something I say very often.
