France's Mercyless play some pretty decent death/thrash on Coloured Funeral, which may not sound all that different or as good as what's being done these days, but back in 1993 that was likely more fresh in the metal landscape. One can hear some Slayer influences in the guitars, though mostly in the faster and crunchier parts, and also in the overall vibe which reminds me a little bit of the late '80s albums. They like to kick the pace left and right and throw in melodic bits seemingly at random and I found that a little distracting at times, but when they get it right, it works. Coloured Funeral is all over the place and there's plenty to like and dislike as a result, but it's definitely an interesting album.
